MAKERS COLLX is a new multi-use maker’s building in Lisbon, Portugal, adjacent to the River Tagus. The proposed program consists of maker spaces, educational, commerce and public facilities.

The concept is based on the idea of thresholds. Through the analysis of Lisbon being a continuous hilly landscape, it was observed that spaces are connected and separated by thresholds. Thresholds create the experience of depth and transition, and sometimes they become so extended that hidden in-between spaces, such as courtyards and laneways, emerge.  They become potential places of unexpected interactions and hybrid programming.

Makers COLLX aims to provide an innovative learning environment that integrates different creatives together, both traditional crafts and technology. The 60 programs were arranged based on the unique process of individual makers so there are endless possibilities of how to experience the space. The intersections between functions create in-between spaces of various typologies where collision programs are introduced. They aim to bring users from different spaces into a collective environment.  Each threshold acts as an element of surprise, gradually revealing the characteristics of spaces and events.
