The brief required the heritage-listed campsite at Gnaraloo Station in the outback of Western Australia, just off Ningaloo Reef, to be expanded to facilitate an additional 200 visitors and divers. The new masterplan hopes to attract more campers and tourists, while being sensitive to the existing landscape. Pressure is building for developments around Australia that combine architectural excellence with sustainable outcomes to achieve a memorable experience. The aim is to create memorable living places while respecting and learning from the given context. Through experiencing the site, the concept of “Genius Loci” was derived, which translated to ‘the protective spirit’ of the place. The intangible notion which defines the unique characteristics of the site was established: harmony between the human and its environment. The project aims to create a unified relationship between the two.
Campsite program includes: reception, shop, canteen/bar, yoga, kids area, public communal area (fires, BBQ), shared laundry, public fish cleaning area, beach service centre, recyclying centre, accommodation (individual and family cabins), generator camping area, unpowered camping area, staff cabins and communal area, amphitheatre, water tanks, ablution blocks, carpark, generators, and natural area.
